Land Windsurfing at Troon Beach
A new sport seems to be appearing and Troon Beach is one of the more popular venues. If you have ever thought Windsurfing looks fun but you are not too confident in the water – well this sport is simply made for you!
It all began with skateboarders fixing make-shift sails to their boards and trying to catch some decent gusts to accelerate the speed of their board. Well, that’s how it all began – locally.
In fact, the sport has been around for quite a while. It is a cross between windsurfing and skateboarding and has been an outdoor activity for over 20 years. Originating in France, the idea of land windsurfing was as a winter alternative to windsurfing. Much of the equipment used in windsurfing can be used for land windsurfing. Although similar to windsurfing, the sport is affiliated to the Land Yachting Association, which also includes kite buggies.
One of the most popular forms of land windsurfing is speed sailing. As a sport, speed sailing is easier to learn than it’s water based counterpart, yet a lot of moves, particularly in freestyle can be learned on the speed sail and then transferred to the water.
Today, speed sailing is enjoyed around the world. During these events, riders race along a predefined course. Their goal is a simple one: beat the other riders by achieving the fastest course time.
There are many other names for this sport eg kite land boarding, speed sailing, land boarding , street sailing, sand yachting, land yachting or dirt windsurfing. Which one do you prefer?
Land windsurfing (in all of its forms) is a fun, easy-to-learn sport that blends the excitement of conventional windsurfing with the quick pace of skateboarding.

I have to admit, even as a bit of a 'scaredy-cat', this looks like loads of fun! I would love to try it, so maybe I need to add it to my list of "Things to do before I'm 40", although to be honest(tbh), I probably will struggle to get myself past the 'good intentions' stage! Hehe! :S
