Hogg Hall in Galston was the scene of celebrations on Sunday as the first ever Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award was presented to a member of the 3rd Galston Company of the Boys’ Brigade.

Graeme Ronald, now a Lieutenant in the Company, has just completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and was presented with this Certificate at the service in the presence of Kilmarnock Provost Stephanie Young.

During his intensive training for the King George VI Officer’s Training Course which lasted two weeks and involved Graeme staying and working away from home as part of a team, he then went on to complete a full year’s service in his Company as a Warrant Officer.

Somehow Graeme also found time out to participate in one of his favourite sports, Gymnastics, at which time he also assisted the younger boys while providing them with support and leadership. This was no doubt one of the sports which helped keep Graeme fit enough to complete the strenuous 4 day , 50 mile trek into the Cairngorm Mountains!

During her speech, Provost Stephanie Young also mentioned several other services Graeme had provided to the local community on a completely voluntary basis which begs the question, where on earth does he get the time to fit everything in!

Now Graeme has purchased a digital camera and is working on developing his photographic and computer skills. Over the next few months, Graeme will be collecting his best photographs and hopes to produce a completed album after a year.

Graeme’s very proud parents were by his side for the celebrations today as they were for their other son, Stuart, who was the first to complete the King George VI Officer’s Training Course a few years ago! Mr and Mrs Ronald have agreed to let URsTV have an in depth interview to find out how this story all began. Keep an eye on the site for further updates!

Captain David Richmond was responsible for organising this fantastic event and what a huge turnout! Hogg Hall was the venue for the celebrations and all hands were on the deck to help serve the delicious lunch. David was of course a little busy to stop for a chat but has agreed to let us know at a later date what exactly was involved.

Graeme was not the only member of the Company to receive an award on Sunday.

The Queen’s Badge is the highest Boys’ Brigade award and this was presented to Kevin Cumming and Scott McRobert. Lewis James was also presented with the President’s Badge which is the second highest Boys’ Brigade award and Lewis also received his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Well done to all!
