Kilwinning Abbey – The Dig Continues
URsTV returned to Kilwinning Abbey to discover if anything interesting had been uncovered during the archaeological dig and met up with Edward Somerville who is one of the volunteers. Edward gave URsTV this exclusive interview which was fascinating.
The dig and indeed archaeologyitself has various different goals, which range from studying human evolution to cultural evolution and understanding local cultural history. Some coins have been found on the site – but although they were not old enough to cause any kind of excitement they did provide some amusement to the many volunteers!
The Abbey Tower Heritage Centre is full of information as well as access to the many many stairs which lead up to the top of the Tower and offers a spectacular view for miles in every direction. Entry is free and so are the many leaflets and the volunteers are a mine of information as well.
A copy of the leaflet “The Dig” is on the next page which is also full of information.

What a fascinating project at the Abbey! Never know what they are going to dig up. When I went over there were two police women at the site – apparently some old bones were found and the police have to be called to check but since they were REALLY OLD bones, no paperwork needed to be done! Better than telly!
the kilwinning dig did discover two remains of bodies but these may have been several hindred years old and the history documentation is not available to read up on .The church history during the reformation of church scotland. What news is a vialble on the remains of the dig ? will further digs in the future centre on the west side of the abbey close to the tower.
Hi George
Kilwinning Community Archaeology Project are on Facebook and you can keep uptodate with them there. URsTV will be keeping in touch with the group and putting updates on the URsTV site from time to time. We will also be heading back to Kilwinning next year when the second part of the dig begins. So hopefully you will get all your questions answered! Thanks for your comments.
